Shabana has written to the Planning Department at Birmingham City Council in opposition to the Rowton Hotel’s ‘retention of use’ application.
If successful the application will allow the Rowton Hotel, formerly known as the Paragon Hotel, to continue to operate as a large HMO in the face of local opposition.
Over the last 5 years Shabana has raised the concerns of residents with regards to the conditions at the hotel, which also acts as an accommodation provider for those seeking asylum in the UK.
Most recently, Shabana has shared correspondence with the Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, Community Safety and Equalities at Birmingham City Council regarding asylum dispersal policy in the West Midlands. Shabana has written to Government Ministers restating her position that the West Midlands has not received the adequate support to accept additional asylum placements as part of the voluntary asylum dispersal scheme.
In her letter to the Planning Department, Shabana reaffirms her belief in providing safe accommodation and support for those seeking asylum in the UK, whilst highlighting existing concerns from employees at the hotel about alleged unsanitary conditions.
