Meeting local housing needs presents significant challenges for Birmingham.

Shabana has written to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government regarding the growth of the exempt accommodation sector.

The letter, written alongside Councillor Sharon Thompson and Councillor Brigid Jones, relays concerns about the increase in exempt units and associated problems with the sector in Birmingham.

The exempt sector has grown from 14,000 units to 19,000 units in less than two years. This equates to approximately £200m of Benefit funding a year.

In the letter, the signatories call for a plan to address the challenges in the sector and for the Government to support the strategic aims of Birmingham City Council on this issue.
