Research has shown that air quality has improved in the City Centre.

Commenting on the news that the Clean Air Zone has improved air quality in Birmingham, Shabana Mahmood MP said:

“Before Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone was introduced up to 900 people per year were dying early because of air pollution.

“I welcome the news that, in such a short space of time, air quality in the city centre is already improving.

“The Clean Air Zone is doing its job of getting the most dangerously polluting vehicles off city centre streets – and saving lives in the process.

“I’ve always said that the new system should work for Birmingham and that no community is left behind in the process.

“I’ll continue working with Birmingham City Council to ensure that neighbourhoods outside of the zone aren’t negatively impacted by drivers changing their journeys to avoid the city centre.”
