Shabana has been campaigning for better regulation of supported exempt accommodation.

Shabana criticised the lack of Government intervention in a Westminster Hall debate on exempt accommodation.

The debate was prompted after years of lobbying on the issue of badly-run supported exempt accommodation, and the huge increase in units in Birmingham.

In her comments, Shabana called for a fit and proper persons test for providers, a stronger regulator ready to crack down on cowboy landlords, and a definition of ‘support’ in law.

Several other Birmingham MPs also contributed during the debate.

Representing the Government was Eddie Hughes MP, Minister for Rough Sleeping and Housing at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.
