This week, the Chancellor delivered his Spring Budget. Family incomes and living standards are falling again. Yet in the Budget, the Tories made it their priority to give a tax cut to the richest 1%. Labour will reverse this move. Last year, the Conservatives crashed the economy and this year they failed to repair it.
TheBudget is yet more evidence that this government is failing to provide investment for the jobs of the future. We need a proper plan to fund green jobs and industry now, which is exactly what Labour will deliver with our Green Prosperity Plan. This week, I visited Brecon Tower and spoke to the people who were evacuated following a flood a few weeks ago. I called for a full investigation to work out who was responsible for the flooding, and to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
It was brilliant meeting with parents and children at the school gates at St John’s and St Peter’s Academy this week, talking to them about their concerns and what I can do to provide support.
Last week, I wrote to the Energy Minister regarding failures of the Warm Home Discount scheme. The scheme has left vulnerable people out in the cold after changes to eligibility criteria last year. A number of Birmingham Ladywood constituents have been impacted by the changes, missing out on this vital payment. Earlier this month, A bill to manage the supported exempt accommodation sector passed in parliament last week. I welcome the new powers it grants to regulate the rogues, which will make a difference to us here in Birmingham, but we need to go much further. I’ll keep pushing the government to bring in a national regulatory regime. Watch my video on it here: https://fb.watch/jkkDJjrjTO/
I hope everyone has a great weekend.
