Aston University’s law students have been given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to discuss legal careers with the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice.

Shabana visited the campus in February to meet undergraduates from Aston Law School and to view teaching facilities in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

Shabana’s father studied civil engineering at the University in the 1970s so she was invited to watch a class being held by the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences during which students learnt how to build a coolant circuit. Both the college and the University hold the Athena SWAN Gold Award for gender equality which supports diversity and increasing opportunities for students and employees.

The visit concluded with a meeting with Professor Aleks Subic, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, to discuss how the University’s 2030 Strategy is driving growth and will create high-skilled jobs.

Speaking after the visit, Shabana said:

“It was very informative to visit the University to learn more about its commitment to Birmingham and the West Midlands community as well as how it’s driving social mobility, inclusive economic growth and skills development within the region.

“I especially enjoyed the question-and-answer session with law undergraduates during which I talked about why I chose to study law, my experiences as a student and the benefit of considering diverse career paths after graduation. It was great to meet to such an excellent group of students.”
