Shabana Mahmood Member of Parliament for Birmingham Ladywood

Any child in Birmingham whose parents receive Universal Credit will be able to claim free school meals from September 2026.
This will make life easier and more affordable for parents who struggle the most, delivering on the government’s Plan for Change to break down barriers to opportunity and give children the best start in life.
The unprecedented expansion will lift 100,000 children across England completely out of poverty.
Commenting on the announcement, Shabana Mahmood said:
Expanding free school meals – and putting £500 back into parents’ pockets every year as a result – is a game-changer for families in Birmingham.
Alongside free breakfast clubs, cheaper uniform costs and government-funded childcare, this government is putting money in parents’ pockets and giving children the best start in life.
