Shabana Mahmood MP Labour Member of Parliament for Birmingham Ladywood
We all know the feeling – opening the letter from your car insurer to be told your insurance is ready for renewal. When was the last time you opened that letter to find out your car insurance premium had gone down? More often than not the cost of your car insurance premium is going up, rising higher ever year, more than the rate of inflation.
Would it surprise you if I told you drivers in Birmingham pay on average around £500 more for their car insurance premiums than drivers in the South West? Not only that, but residents in Ladywood pay at an even higher rate than leafier suburbs of the city.
And it’s all because of our postcode. Law abiding drivers with no convictions are being ripped off because of where they have lived for most of their lives.
As your Member of Parliament it’s my job to ensure that people in Ladywood are getting a fair deal. I’ve been researching this issue for many years, but the the big car insurance companies don’t want to cooperate. They don’t want you to know why you’re being charged more.
If insurers are going to judge us by our postcode rather than our personal history, then those who are less well off will always be punished. That means the incredible diverse communities in Birmingham Ladywood will bear the brunt of an unfair insurance industry valuing profit over people.
I’m demanding the Government looks at this again, but I need to be backed up with real evidence of car insurance premiums in Ladywood. That’s why I need your help. Will you support my campaign against rip off car insurance by filling in the enclosed survey and posting it back free of charge?
Together we can finally sort out this clear injustice and get a better deal for Ladywood.
