Letter to the Secretary of State

Dear Secretary of State,

I am writing regarding the music and events industry in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

I have recently been contacted by musicians, venue managers, and fans of live music regarding the effects of Covid-19 on the music industry. They are concerned that support packages announced by the Chancellor do not offer enough support for the industry.

I understand that over a third of musicians do not qualify for Government support due to the nature of their work. As such, many are considering leaving the music industry.

In addition, the live music industry is facing severe pressures as music venues are shuttered and summer events are cancelled. Employees at venues and events spaces are facing unemployment upon the conclusion of the Job Retention Scheme.

It is clear that the live music and events industry is a vital part of our economy. As a Member of Parliament representing a city centre constituency containing a large number of venues and event spaces, I understand the great deal of income generated by these venues for other local businesses. The live music industry is also a huge cultural asset to our city and to our country, ensuring that Britain is recognised across the globe as a creative hub.

I understand that the music industry is calling for a clear timeline for reopening venues without social distancing, when it is safe to do so. They would also like to see an immediate and comprehensive business and employment support package, including a full VAT exemption on ticket sales.

Please could you consider the calls of the music industry to support their sector through this challenging period, and also outline what steps the Government will take to ensure the survival of this crucial creative industry.

Yours sincerely,

Shabana Mahmood MP
