Speaking after the news of a series of stabbings in Birmingham City Centre in the early hours of 6th September 2020, Shabana Mahmood MP said:

“Following this morning’s press conference confirming one person has sadly died in the incident, I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the victim’s family and loved ones. My thoughts are also with those who are still recovering from the attack in hospital.

“A suspect is still at large, and people in Birmingham should remain vigilant as the police seek to find and detain the person responsible for this terrible attack. I would urge anybody who may have any information or who may have witnessed the incidents themselves to contacted West Midlands Police as soon as possible by calling 101.

“I would like to thank emergency services personnel, West Midlands Police, and the NHS for their coordinated response to this incident; acting quickly overnight to restore order and doubtless kept many people in the process.

“Local residents should continue to follow official communications from West Midlands Police and refrain from sharing speculation online about the incident as investigations are still ongoing.

“This incident has taken place as our city is still trying to respond and recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. The violent and shocking scenes we have seen overnight act online to undermine these efforts and divide our community when we should be at our most united. In the coming days, I will be doing everything I can to help ensure we come together and move forwards from this deplorable and unacceptable incident.”

UPDATE: A man has been arrested and charged regarding this incident. Please follow latest updates from West Midlands Police.
